Oregon State University
Joan has a special connection to OSU, having first moved to Corvallis when her father joined the OSU faculty in the 1970s. She rode her bike to campus after school, did homework in his office, and sometimes got to play video games at the Superette.
Decades later, she returned to OSU as an attorney in the ASOSU Office of Legal Advising, assisting students with estate planning, powers of attorney, family law including divorces and adoptions, criminal issues, expungements, name changes, and traffic violations. It was a great program, offering free legal services to students paid for by student fees. In three years Joan helped almost 800 students with legal issues. However, the funding did not allow for in-court representation, which is so crucial to effective assistance, especially in criminal matters.
In her private practice, Joan is pleased to provide wrap-around legal representation to OSU students, accompanying them in every phase of the process including university interviews whenever possible, police interviews whenever possible, all court appearances, and follow up help with answering background checks, and obtaining dismissals after diversions and expungements. Joan provides free consultations to OSU students, and offers OSU student discounts on her fixed fee rates. Her top priority is to get her clients graduated and on their way with their careers with as little damage to their college record and future prospects as possible.
Lack of familiarity with the law, cultural and language barriers, immigration consequences, and, unfortunately sometimes, cultural biases, result in difficult challenges for international students facing criminal charges. Joan has worked closely with the international student program at OSU and has offered educational outreach programs to OSU international students. Joan has extensive experience finding creative solutions to criminal cases that eliminate or minimize immigration risks to international students. Joan works closely with prosecutors and immigration attorneys to best assist her international clients.
